The Christmas Story
Always reaching for that star…
15 December 2014
When I graduated from nursing school, our class sang “The Impossible Dream.” We never did quite make that last high note but we were applauded for trying.
My father Jacob loved the selection as well.
August 1991 was memorable as I took my father and his sister Ruth to Art Park in Lewiston, New York to see the performance of the “Man of La Mancha.”
January 1992, Jacob entered his heavenly home.
As I compile Jacob’s memoirs the message in the song comforts and blesses me.
In a little shop in Micanopy, Florida I found a unicorn that played “The Impossible Dream.”
When we relocated to Lake Alfred, Florida the unicorn fell of the shelf and was shattered.
In 2013, at the “Hope Thrift Store,” in Clearwater , Florida I was led to another unicorn that played the same melody. The unicorn was soiled and battered and the music played very slow. This was a comfort because writing takes discipline and cannot be rushed. Everything is in God’s time and never happens a minute too soon.
After yet another relocation to Western, New York, a huge adjustment, another unicorn revealed itself in a Veterans Thrift Store, Sitting proudly upon its back was a beautiful figure of a woman with the face of an angel. To my surprise when I wound the figurine it played “The Impossible Dream” in perfect in perfect melody and timing.
As I struggle with yet another challenge, a patellar fracture, I gaze my eyes on the unicorn that is battered yet plays a beautiful tune, only slowly.
I am thankful for my husband Al, my best friend Mary Ann, and a competent physician and staff at the Orthopedic Center, who will help direct me through this “temporary inconvenience.”
Sometimes in the night or early morning I have seen one of the planets, perhaps Venus, yet I imagine it as the Bethlehem Star assuring me that all is well.

It has been my quest to share his story so that others may find courage and strength in difficult times.
I will be in the “Recovery Mode” for a few days so stay tuned for a post later this week.
I will add images of the unicorn when I can locate the drive it is located on.
Have a blessed an happy day. Dorothy
